Residency & Legal Stay in Madrid

Community of Madrid

Madrid is where the national immigration authorities actually sit. In an ordinary case that changes nothing — the law is the same everywhere — but in an unusual one it matters: appeals, escalations and files that do not fit a standard category are resolved here without passing through a regional layer, and the specialised Unidad de Grandes Empresas handles large-employer and highly-qualified applications on a separate track.

Madrid is also the simplest linguistic environment in this list. There is no co-official language, so no regional certificate ever needs translating into a second Spanish language before it can join your file — one step that Barcelona, Valencia and Bilbao cases sometimes need.

Questions about this service

Is a permit decided faster in Madrid because the ministry is there?

Not as a rule. Standard files follow the same legal deadlines everywhere, and the Madrid office carries a heavy caseload of its own. Where proximity genuinely helps is the non-standard case — an appeal, a discretionary route, a file that needs a decision from a central body rather than a provincial one.

My employer is a large multinational. Does that change the route?

It can. Large employers and highly-qualified roles may qualify for the dedicated unit rather than the general queue, which is a different procedure with different documentation from the employer's side. Whether you qualify depends on the company and the role, so it is worth confirming before you start assembling a standard file.
