Temporary Protection (Ukrainians) in Gran Canaria

Canary Islands

Gran Canaria applies through the Oficina de Extranjería de Las Palmas. As everywhere in the archipelago, there is no CREADE, so protection, the social security number and the health card are obtained through separate appointments rather than in one visit.

Las Palmas does have something the other islands do not: a genuinely developed remote-work economy, with reliable connectivity and an established co-working sector. For someone arriving with skills that transfer online, that changes the question from finding local seasonal work to setting up correctly as self-employed under the Canary tax regime — a different and, done properly, better outcome.

Questions about this service

I already work online for clients abroad. What changes on protection?

Temporary protection gives you the right to work, but it does not register you as self-employed or settle where your income is taxed. Both need doing deliberately, and in Las Palmas the Canary indirect-tax rules mean the mainland answer is the wrong one.

Can I move to the mainland later without losing my status?

Yes. Temporary protection is national and moves with you. What has to be redone locally is empadronamiento, your health-centre registration and, if you are self-employed, your tax registration — because leaving the Canary regime for the mainland one is a real change, not an address update.
